What happens when I come to you for the first time?
We will perform a complete examination with photos and models of your teeth. We also need to take X-rays. Based on these, we assess what type of treatment you need. You will then get an appointment to discuss the treatment options.
Is there anything I should do before you fit the braces?
Everyone who is to have braces must have very good oral hygiene, no cavities, or other problems. If so, these problems must be remedied first. We therefore recommend that those who have not had their teeth checked for cavities in the past 12 months do a new examination before treatment begins. Remember that we cannot start orthodontics if your oral hygiene is not good.
How long does an orthodontic treatment take?
This depends on how large and difficult to treat your bite defect is. The most common treatment time with fixed braces is about 1.5 years. There are also long treatments that can take over three years. When we go through your treatment options, we also tell you how long your treatment will take. However, there is always some uncertainty in the assessment of the treatment time, and it can therefore be both shorter and longer than initially assumed.
How often do I need to come back to check the braces?
We need to see you every 6-8 weeks. In certain types of treatments or during certain phases of treatment, the interval may be both shorter or longer.
Can I have different colors on the braces?
Yes. To hold the archwire in the brackets, small rubber bands are used, which are available in a variety of different colors. These rubber bands are changed after each treatment session, and you can choose different colors each time.
Can I have white brackets on the braces?
Yes, you can have porcelain brackets, but this incurs an extra cost per tooth. There are also some limitations on where they can be used.
Does it hurt to have braces?
It is painless to fit braces. However, you may be sore in the teeth for the first week due to the tension in the braces. It can also be a bit generally inconvenient due to unfamiliarity and that it chafes against the inside of the lips and cheeks. The discomfort usually disappears quite quickly but may return to a lesser extent after the braces have been tightened at follow-up visits. Many patients have no discomfort at all, while others may have a really tough time for a couple of days. Some may, on rare occasions, feel the need to take a pain-relieving tablet. Pain or discomfort usually subsides within a few days/a week after the visit, and the occurrence of discomfort is perceived as relatively low.
Can I eat as usual with braces?
Most things are perfectly fine to eat. However, you must be very careful with the intake of sweets, soda, and other things with sugar in them (try to keep it to once a week). If you eat raw root vegetables such as carrots and apples, you should not bite off but cut into pieces and eat on the side. Otherwise, there is a greater risk that the brackets in the front may come loose.
What do I do if the braces break?
A broken brace is usually not an urgent problem if it does not chafe or irritate in any other way. In some cases, you can wait for the regular visit as the problem can be remedied then. Call us at 08-400 246 77 and ask if it is necessary with quick action. If no answer, leave a message, and the staff will call you back.
How should I brush my teeth?
We give you instructions on how to best keep clean. Dirt and food residues adhere much better to braces than to regular teeth. It is therefore very important that it is thoroughly clean; otherwise, it can easily become discolorations or cavities in the teeth. Discolorations can then be difficult to remove. You can use an electric toothbrush or a regular toothbrush. The most important thing is that you get it clean. You should also use a special type of toothbrush to get clean between the brackets. In addition, you need to rinse your mouth with fluoride rinse.
Can there be damage to the teeth from the braces?
With poor oral hygiene and poor diet, marks or cavities can easily occur on the teeth. These discolorations can then be very difficult to remove. In very rare cases, an orthodontic treatment can cause shortening of the tooth root or loss of blood supply to the tooth. The occurrence of side effects is very small and is usually no reason to refrain from treatment.
Can the teeth go back to their original position after the treatment is completed?
After completed orthodontic treatment, you get a so-called retainer. A retainer is a very simple brace that can consist of either a thin wire glued to the back of the teeth or a transparent splint that is mostly used at night. It is used to keep the teeth still after the fixed brace has been removed. If you do not use it properly, the teeth can go back a bit.
